The “Friends” finale, on May 6, 2004, was the most watched television episode of the decade, and the fourth most watched series finale in the history of television. It also marked the end — at least for now — to the kind of huge, mainstream culturally influential television sitcom. It undoubtedly had its detractors, but for most of us, it was quality comfort television, at least until the waning years, when the quality began to deteriorate. The NBC sitcom, which ran for 10 years, was nominated for 63 Primetime Emmys and inspired a multitude of imitators (and very bad haircuts), none of which came even close to matching the success of “Friends.” And the show still lives on, in constant rotation in syndication, and until another sitcom comes along like “Friends” or “Seinfeld,” it may live on permanently in reruns.
