This afternoon’s literary terms quiz basically asks you to remember all of the terms you learned in English class that you’ve since forgotten. It’s the sort of quiz that likes to tickle the tip of your tongue: Many of the answers may roll off, but some others may never make the leap. Here’s a hint to get you started: If you know what a paronomasia is, or are familiar with the critical stylings of Gene Shalit or Martin Mull, you should have a leg up.

If you came of age in the 80s, 90s, or hell, even in the Aughts, the films of John Hughes, no doubt, have had an impact on your life. The man was responsible for some of the best comedies of the 80s (and some of the not-so-great comedies of the 90s — DENNIS THE MENACE, BEETHOVEN). Hughes directed his last film, CURLY SUE, in 1991, and retired from public life in 1994, and became our generation’s JD Salinger-like recluse. Sadly, he died last year, but his films live on. As does John Hughes’ trivia.

The romantic comedy has been a largely maligned genre of film ever since John Hughes took his final bow, Woody Allen stopped caring, Cameron Crowe hit a rough patch, and Billy Wilder exited state left of life. It doesn’t happen very often, but occasionally a movie like Drew Barrymore’s Going the Distance will come along and restore my belief that, at the very least, it’s possible not to completely screw up a rom com (see, in my opinion, the above pictured for an example of screwed up). It is those temporary reprieves from the stultifyingly awful romantic comedies that keep my flicker of affection for the genre alive. Maybe you have a guilty fondness, as well? Today’s Daily Grind is the first quiz out of the last ten to be rated below 1200 on our Elo-based Difficulty Scale. This scale is similar to the one used to rank chess players.

We’ve set the average rating to be 1200… so if a question is rated above 1200 it’s harder than average.  If a player is rated above 1200, that player is better than average.  We’ll be doing a lot of interesting things with the rating system in the next few months, so keep your eyes peeled if you are a stats geek like me.  For now, you can see the first iteration of our  stats display by clicking your hyperlinked username in the upper right hand corner of your screen… check it out, it’s pretty cool, and will only get better with time.

Anyway, today’s quiz is easier than the average Daily Grind quiz by around 100 ratings points… these 100 points translate around 3 extra questions answered correctly (out of 25) for an average, 1200 rated player.

There’s a couple questions on business trivia, the obligatory chemistry trivia question, and a bunch of cultural literacy trivia.  If you like fluff, today’s quiz is not for you… I’d recommend our entertainment trivia section to scratch that itch.

I play a weekly pub trivia game, and — as a team — our greatest weakness always seems to be Greek and Norse mythology, a painful Achilles heel for a game that, in general, relies so heavily on those topics. Today’s quiz will test your knowledge of Norse Mythology trivia, i.e., how big of a nerd you are. If it weren’t for the fact that I know too much about the upcoming Thor movie, I’d have been completely lost. Unfortunately for me, there are no questions about who will play Thor (Chris Hemsworth), who will play his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins), or who is directing the film (Kenneth Branagh).

All I can say is that 13 year old girl must have had a pretty amazing CD collection, because this band ROCKS!

You see, these guys play mashups of some metal and rock classics… Metallica, Journey, Queen, Madonna(?), and Warrant.  It’s pretty spectacular.

For a little over a month, every employee of our startup ecommerce company has been flat out addicted to this band…  the warehouse is rockin’ like never before thanks to Rock Sugar.

So, in the spirit of Rock Sugar, we’ve created a mashup of our own.  We’ve mashed up our obsession with Rock Sugar and our obsession with trivia to create this quiz… it’s my favorite quiz on the whole site.
