While we are mired in a seemingly endless winter, our regular delivery from the Harry and David fruit of the month club keeps the scurvy at bay.
As you trivia buffs undoubtedly know, scurvy is caused by a deficiency in vitamin C. In the 1700s, James Lind discovered the link between the vitamin and the disease. Many decades after Lind made the discovery, the British Navy finally supplemented their sailors diets with citrus fruits. This supplementation led to the nickname “limey.”
Scurvy, also known as Barlow’s disease when it occurs in kids, produces characteristic bloody gums and spots on the skin.
Also of note to trivia competitors:
- Scurvy is a human specific problem… most animals synthesize their own vitamin c.
- Vitamin c is also know as ascorbic acid.
With a tip of the cap to Harry, David, James Lind, the British Navy, and Flintstone’s vitamins, today’s quiz focuses on fruit trivia.
