David Letterman's scandal (which I neglected to comment on last week as I was laid up with the flu) has become a running joke. Personally, I think he handled the situation with humor, dignity and aplomb -- but of course that didn't stop his unfunny, hacky competition from creaming their pants over it.
Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon poked fun at the Letterman scandal.
"If you came here tonight for sex with a talk show host, you've got the wrong studio," Leno said in his monologue.
Fallon cracked: "There's a new book out called 'Why Women Have Sex' that says there are 237 reasons why women have sex. And folks, Letterman knows the top 10."
Meanwhile, Conan O'Brien opted to go for not mentioning it whatsoever:
Guest Drew Carey brought it up on his show. "I would hate to be on opposite Letterman tonight with all that sex stuff going on," Carey said. "That's got to be tough."
But O'Brien -- who has called Letterman one of his influences -- replied, "No comment." (Source)
See, that's what you'd call taking the "high road." But then again, whereas Conan is very popular with the younger hipper demographic -- I don't know anyone under the age of 55 who watches Jay Leno and I don't know anyone of any age who watches Jimmy Fallon. So I guess they really know what it takes to achieve their astounding popularity with old people and no people.
jay leno is the most unfunny, talentless, piece of shit hack, who should just kill himself already.
Oh, f-ing WAAAAAAA.
Please. That old fart Letter can dish it out but YOU can't take it? Hell, YOU dish it out in heaps on a bunch of weird twisted celebufreaks, but YOU can't take it FOR him, that old dirty bastard?
Not to get too political...Dave can make some pretty sick jokes about sex with KIDS when they happen to be about Sarah Palin's kids, but since we disagree with her politics it's OK.
Dave bangs interns, but making fun of him is, what? Poor taste?
Am I the only one seeing a really shitty, hypocritical double standard here?
Maybe Dave can interview Roman Polanski next and they can commiserate together on how unfair life is.
Fucking please.
I think Jay is funny, but that's just me. I also think Dave is funny too and he handled herself with dignity. Dave can dish it out because celebs make themselves easy targets by putting themselves out there, he on the other hand has always kept his life super private. As for talking about having sex with children? Give me a fucking break. Everyone knows he was talking about Palin's oldest daughter, ya know the one who had teenage sex and got pregnant? The one Palin chose to pimp on the campaign trail? All that bullshit from Caribou Babs was just noise and her attempt to stay relevant in the media spotlight she so hates. You betcha!
EmptyHead--for the record, Dave's joke was about Bristol Palin, who we are 100% sure had sex (evidence A--the baby out of wedlock). It was Sarah Palin who pretended it was about the other daughter (don't remember the name). You can watch the clip at Youtube, instead of relying on hearsay from Palin.
Finally--regardless of Dave's actions (which was icky and stupid), the women involved were not KIDS. They don't just turn into KIDS just because you disagree with Dave's politics (hmm...what is it with Palin supporters who see pedophilia everywhere?).
I'll agree with the above commenters that Dave's joke about Bristol Palin (and Sarah for that matter) was fair game, but EmptyHead makes a good point--Dave has been making cracks about the personal scandals of celebrities for years. How is it somehow beyond the pale for other late night hosts to rip on him? Do we really think for a minute that he wouldn't be doing the same if this scandal was with Jay Leno?
I'm just not understanding the outrage here.
Letterman is fine; he never was the “Family Values” type. Yes, he probably cheated on his girlfriend now wife. But at least he does go around claiming he is Mr. “Family Values” like some of our politicians (can you just see the grin on all “Fake News” reporters/commentators and the Palin’s fringe). This has been a tough summer, for Dave, for our economy but at least he did not end up on the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Stanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC).
This is the problem I have with Leno's and Fallon's "jokes": They're incredibly lame and not the least bit funny. Is that really the best they can do???
I thought David handled a very distasteful and potentially completely humiliating public scandal with complete aplomb and class. Regardless of whether he was indiscreet, (keeping in mind none of us really know what goes on behind closed doors) he was very candid in front of millions of viewers, and that, in my books, makes him a class act.
Speaking of class acts, soooo impressive that Conan refused to comment on the situation; he went up about a million points with me for that. :)
Sigh…
Brando, thank you for getting it.
Zeiss, True_Blue, Paul and the rest of you – I don’t actually care about Bristol-Fucking-Palin. I don’t care about Willow and TreeBark and Platypus and the rest of her fucking brood. God, that little voice in my head said “Don’t touch that third rail of popular culture hatred - don’t say that ‘Palin’ word unless it’s preceded by ‘Michael’”. Hell, even then most of you unconscious d-bags probably wouldn’t get the reference.
I should have picked somebody else who Dave has mercilessly hacked apart over the years – that would have made my point easier. But now you guys pissed me off.
I am completely annoyed (outraged? maybe…) by the ridiculous double standard at work in Hollywood. I don’t give two shits about Dave’s politics or all those people Paul listed who I don’t even know (what, did I turn this into the Huffington Post?). It doesn’t matter what somebody’s politics are - if they do wrong, they do wrong. And yes children, some Republicans do wrong. And yes, some Democrats do wrong. Neither party has a lock on right or wrong because they are made up of people, and people sometimes suck. Can everyone grasp that concept?
And Dave has done wrong too. Having sex with the people who work for you is WRONG. It’s called sexual harassment. It’s wrong because it’s almost always (I said almost…) impossible to create a consensual sexual relationship with someone who’s your boss. Who pays you. Who promotes or fires you. Anyone ever hear of women’s lib?
Now, how do I know that there at the show, Dave is having sex with someone who actually works for him? Well, because it’s the David Fucking Letterman show, that’s how!
Whether it’s Dave, Bill Clinton working the intern, Newt Gingrich and his campaign aid, the owner of some car dealership in Des Moines and his secretary, or even Polanski and little girls (more wronger for obvious reasons), it’s wrong and more than a little twisted for men in positions of authority to use that authority to bang bitches.
Any questions?
I believe that the American people can see the distinction between a Late Night jokester and a Politician who preaches one thing and lives another. And I also believe that the American people will have more compassionate about this situation, but who knows what the court case will reveal. Let's remember "Those who are not willing to give pardon and mercy are those that do not need pardon and mercy. By the way, who are you to cast stones?
Thanks Paul. I will remember that it's OK to be a sexual predator as long as I don't claim to be a sexual predator.
Asshole.
Sorry - I meant to say "...as long as I don't claim NOT to be a sexual predator..."
I got the "Asshole" part right.

Wow, that was a terrible discussion. And seriously, EmptyHead, you are taking this shit super personally.
And you're missing the point: It's different for Leno and co. to make fun of Dave than Dave making fun of Palin because they are rivals within the same field basically holding the same job. If Obama made that same joke about Bristol Palin, or Hilary Clinton did it, or even if McCain did it, it would not be at all okay. Now, I think it's okay for Fallon to comment on it because what the fuck does he care? But Leno beat Dave for the Tonight Show, and the bad blood's been there for years, Conan took Dave's old job and considers him an idol, and Ferguson gets his checks from the guy.
Plus, there's a little difference here: Dave isn't being high-and-mighty about it, he's being honest and apologetic. If Palin didn't carry herself, as most politicians do, like some sort of morally high-minded embodiment of good who's better than everyone else, people probably wouldn't give her as much shit. In short, it's easy to kick someone when they're down, but if they're sincere they shouldn't get kicked quite as hard.
It's true that Letterman is fair game, and I think he would agree. However, I'm not really sure what EmptyHead's so upset about. Overreact much? Geez...
Anyway, Leno and Fallon's jokes were lame.
