It just shows that life is all about semantics. The sanctity of marriage argument is based on one's personal belief which is based on one's myopic view of the world. Marriage absolutely is a right, as any heterosexual couple can dramatically increase their social standing by getting married. Marriage is protected by so many laws and court rulings in this country they're beyond count.

People get tax breaks for being married; being married makes it easier to adopt children; being married is a protected status under job discrimination laws in many states; the Supreme Court has ruled that married status is protected under the Equal Protection Clause.

Or you could just listen to the countless soundbites from your Congress and state legislatures about how marriage is a fundamental right between a man and a woman. They say it all the time, so obviously most of the government disagrees with you.

A little readily available information about the U.S. Supreme Court's view of marriage.

In another case, Zablocki v Redhail (1978), the Court struck down a Wisconsin law that barred marriage rights to people who hadn't paid their child support. The Court explicitly stated that marriage is "a fundamental right" under the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause.
