Domestic Violence

christian-bale-posters.jpgDomestic Violence (Noun) A violent confrontation between family or household members involving physical harm, sexual assault, or fear of physical harm.

I got no joke for this one, folks:

Batman star Christian Bale was to be questioned by police over allegations he assaulted his mother and sister the night before the European premiere of his film, The Dark Knight, British media reported Tuesday.

His mother and sister reportedly complained that the 34-year-old actor assaulted them at a west London hotel on Sunday.

Britain's Press Association said they made the allegation at a police station in south England on Monday and that the allegation was passed on to Scotland Yard in London. It said questioning was expected Tuesday. (Source)

Oh, please please please don't let this be true. Oh please oh please oh please! This guy is way too cool to be that guy. And if it is true, if it has to be true, at least let it be because of some sort of method acting mishap. That his Dark Knight personae inadvertently slipped into his real life, somehow.

Oh, jeez. This is not good. It's really not good.

Update: He's been arrested and he's in custody.

Fuck...are you kidding me? But he seemed so nice, and he was a good actor. Shit...Nothing ruins a crush like domestic abuse.

I'm pretty confused about the whole thing, so I'm just going to wait and see what actually happened before knocking Bale a few notches down on my list.

Nika said:

He hasn't been formally charged yet, and it's been reported that he turned himself in. I think British law is such that suspects are arrested before questioning. In any case, I just can't believe he would physically assault someone.

I'm with angi. I'll bet this is jackass family issues and not a case of Christian Bale secretly being a bastard. He dates Maggie, after all, and I don't think she'd allow herself to be somebody's punching bag.

Should be mentioned that in legal terms, battery is what is used when an altercation is physical, so if he was charged with just assault, it can't be a bad as many are imagining, and he did turn himself in...

Now I'm sad. And I blame Russell Crowe's bad influence.

Yeah, I should back up Nika's comment, the British law is such that a person may be arrested without being formally charged.

But this has got to be some sick fucking joke that broke out in the press furor of the film and everything.

There's no fucking way he'd break out domestic violence.... especially toward his mom and sister! Man, has anyone seen his speech from the 2006 MTV Movie Awards?

I call bullshit too.

They keep using the term "lashing out" which just makes it sound like he yelled at them for fucks sake. I have a hard time believing that Bale just hauled off and knocked out his mom.

I understand having his back on this, I really do since I love him oh so much, but honestly, his mother and sister filed a report with the police? Something bad must have seriously gone down, and whether it's just a family argument or whether it's actually a case of something more, I think it's pretty fucked up that you'd get your own mother to the point where she'd feel as though she needed to get the police involved.

Until I hear otherwise, he fucking sucks.

It looks as if it is just a verbal assault. And I've been skeptical all along of the timing on the mother and sister's part. They went to the police the next day right before the movie premiere. Sounds like bad blood brought on by the noncelebrity family and I'm beginning to side with Bale on this one.

From People (via IMDb):

Christian Bale's attorneys released a statement Tuesday denying assault allegations that led to the actor's arrest in London: "Christian Bale attended a London police station today, on a voluntary basis, in order to assist with an allegation that had been made against him to the police by his mother and sister," the star's lawyers said in the statement. "Mr. Bale who denies the allegation, co-operated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police. At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."

From Yahoo:

LONDON - Batman star Christian Bale was arrested Tuesday over allegations of assaulting his mother and sister, police and British media said.

The 34-year-old actor spent four hours at a London police station before being released on bail.

British media had reported that Bale's mother and sister complained he had assaulted them at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Sunday night, a day before the European premiere of his latest film, "The Dark Knight."

The Sun newspaper said police did not question the actor Monday because they did not want to interfere with the premiere of the movie.

Asked Tuesday whether Bale had been arrested, a London police spokesman did not refer to him by name but said: "A 34-year-old man attended a central London police station this morning by appointment and was arrested in connection with an allegation of assault."

The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because force policy did not authorize him to be identified. British police do not name suspects before they are formally charged.

The force later said in a statement that the man had been released on bail pending further inquiries and told to return on an unspecified date in September.

U.S.-based representatives for Bale didn't immediately return messages seeking comment. Repeated phone calls to Bale's London representative went unanswered.

I'm inclined to think this was an argument gone ugly.

Please please please please let this be a misunderstanding. Or let his mother and sister be drunk, opportunistic ass holes. Or let it be someone else. Or something.

Otherwise - well, Jeremy is right. Nothing ruins a crush faster than domestic abuse.

Sorry for the multiple postings but I have undertaken the task of the vindication of Bat(e)man as a personal goal.

Via Slashfilm:

UPDATE: Apparently raising your voice against your mum in the UK is against the law. The charge was “verbal assault.”

Yes, he’s already out on b-a-i-l. Earlier today, London police arrested Christian Bale, not to be confused with Adam West, and held him for questioning after his mum and one of his elder sisters made allegations of assault. The charges hit news outlets yesterday, but police apparently backed off and let Bale attend last night’s London premiere of his film, The Dark Knight.
